WHY:

Something can appear one way, but when folded/unfolded it shapes in to something different. To unfold something will usually expose what’s on the inside or unravel the folded surface true potential. Nature does this all the time, leaves for example, and we humans do it too. Especially in relations with others, even though we can’t actually see it. We unfold who we are by the things we say and the things we do. The relationship between closed and open is one fold at a time. So, you choose! How may folds do you need to unfold, to expose what you want?
WHAT:
UNFOLDED is a backpack concept. The idea came out of a workshop with Jule Waibel, where I learned folding techniques, and how to use them to make products. The prototype is made out of paper, but the final product will be in a more sustainable fabric (I was thinking wool, still needs experimenting).

HOW:
The backpack prototype is made from one large piece of paper and one cardboard piece for the back. This makes the assembly easy, but the pattern is time-consuming since folded by hand. This is an ongoing project which needs more testing, in the right material. But the form-expression and aesthetics of the folds is the main reason for the concept and is the initiating factor for further progress. To be continued…. One fold at a time….
