WHY:
It’s morning and the battle between you and time has stated. Trying in a hurry to get things done before you need to be somewhere. In this rush you try to remember everything; keys, phone, wallet…AH! don’t forget your coffee…before you nearly run out the door. Well, if you only could. The door needs so be opened with two functional arms. And right now, you only have a half to spare. Everything needs to be replaced. Keys are held by mouth, wallet under your arm, phone is squashed into the back pocket and your coffee cup must go down on to the floor. Finally, the door can be opened! Yet, the process of assembling your things is up next. This of course does not go so smoothly, and a dark river with a desirable roasted smell runs down your hallway and creates puddle of your much-needed coffee. Recognize this? It’s sad, but true. That a small and trivial problem can destroy a perfectly great day…

WHAT:
This was a school project where one of the themes one could choose was “The travel to work”. I choose to focus on the key words “free hands” and “coffee cup”, which lead up to the problem definition; “How to rebuild a coffee cup, so that you easily can travel with it?”.
CARRY ON is a ceramic coffee cup and travel mug hybrid. With a band attached to each side allowing the cup to swinging in one direction to prevent spilling. The band also makes it possible to carry the mug with other body parts in addition to holding it by hand. With free hands it makes it easier to carry your coffee to work.
HOW:
This assignment focused on users and functions. Exploring user testing and elite users, such as users with one hand or people in need of a cane or crutch, the product where always in change and in constant development. The solution went through the concepts of deformation of a cups body and shape, to focus more of the function of the handle and how to carry a cup.
